Welcome! My name is Katie Broedner- I’m a Marriage & Family therapist in California and I work primarily with children, teens, and young adults.
As a new reader, I’m going to make just a few assumptions about you. You’re probably very interested in mental health, a bit anxious about the process of therapy, and you’re wanting a peek ‘behind the curtain’.
If any of this describes you, you’ve come to the right place! I’m a therapist, and I’m here to answer the questions that you may be nervous to ask. The goal of this blog is to de-mystify not only the concept of therapy, but therapists themselves. I’ve sat on both sides of the couch (or computer screen), and have noticed that the relationship between a client and therapist can be uniquely mystifying.
As a client, I found myself wondering the following:
“Does my therapist like me?”
“Does everyone need therapy?”
And, at the beginning, “Does therapy even work?”
I used to think that I was the only person who has these types of questions, but time and experience has shown me that that is not the case. These are challenging questions to answer, and I have no doubt that each person in the field may have slightly different thoughts and responses. My goal is not to provide sweeping declarations on the behalf of all therapists, but rather, to share my insights. And, in doing so, I hope to make you feel more comfortable about the idea of therapy.
In addition, I will also share my thoughts on parenting, relationships, identity, self-care and more!
Stay tuned for semi-regular updates, and please feel free to comment if you have any thoughts, questions or suggestions!
